Match your dates to the offer
Booking windows and travel windows are different. Check both, together with any excluded dates, destinations or properties.
Compare like for like
Compare the same room, guests, baggage and included services. Check taxes and other charges shown before payment.
Read the cancellation terms
A flexible reservation may suit your plans better than a lower non-refundable price. Read the booking conditions before deciding.
Check how a discount is calculated
A percentage discount may apply only to the room charge, not taxes or other fees, and may have a maximum saving. Compare the total shown for the same itinerary. For example, a 10% offer capped at $30 saves at most $30 on an eligible $500 booking, not $50. This example illustrates a cap and is not a current promotion.
Review changes as well as cancellations
Changing a date, guest or room type can affect the price or invalidate an offer. Read who handles changes—the booking platform or the accommodation provider—and check the confirmation after any amendment. If plans are uncertain, compare the cost of flexibility before choosing a non-refundable booking.
Check who sold the booking
A flight, room and rental car shown in one app may still be separate contracts. Note the seller and confirmation number for each before paying, then compare cancellation terms per component. For a U.S. airline ticket bought at least seven days before departure, the airline must offer either a 24-hour no-penalty cancellation/refund or a 24-hour price hold; it need not offer both, and that airline rule does not apply to tickets bought through an online travel agency. See the U.S. Department of Transportation's ticket guide. Do not assume a generic “24-hour free cancellation” applies to your booking.
Price the flexibility separately
For the same room and dates, suppose a non-refundable rate is $104 and a rate cancellable until a stated deadline is $112. The flexibility costs $8, before any difference in taxes or included services. Check the exact deadline and time zone; after it, both rates may carry a charge.
