Beauty Rewards: 10 Checks Before You Spend

A useful beauty reward fits a purchase you already planned. This guide is for shoppers using US beauty stores: compare membership conditions, keep track of receipts and weigh the cost of chasing a perk. Ulta provides a few examples; other stores have their own rules.

01

Evaluate Spending Tiers Against Your Natural Annual Budget

Tier Evaluation
When this applies

Budget-minded beauty shoppers

Calculate whether your standard annual beauty purchases reach status tiers without increasing your discretionary spending. Retailers often provide elevated earning rates at higher tiers, but purchasing extra products solely to unlock status costs far more out of pocket than the resulting points are worth.

Keep in mind: Extra spending can exceed the value of a higher tier.

More detail

Compare benefits you would actually use with the extra spending needed to qualify. Staying on the basic tier is a reasonable choice.

02

Track Retailer-Specific Expiration Rules Instead of Guessing

Point Expiration
When this applies

Infrequent shoppers

Review your account dashboard periodically to check when accumulated rewards lapse. Programs use different schedules, ranging from fixed calendar quarters to rolling inactivity windows. Only redeem points when you have genuine purchase needs.

Keep in mind: Do not assume a program will restore an expired balance.

More detail

Check the expiry information in your own account. Plan around genuine needs rather than adding an order just to redeem a balance.

03

Check App Promos Only for Planned Purchases

Promotion Activation
When this applies

Planners and restock shoppers

Before placing a planned restock order, look in the retailer app for opt-in point multipliers on brands or categories you intend to buy. Avoid browsing promotional menus when you have no buying needs, as this frequently encourages impulse spending.

Keep in mind: Activation and offer-combination rules differ.

More detail

Read the activation and combination terms on the offer itself. Check that the benefit appears before paying.

04

Review Third-Party Marketplace and Delivery Restrictions

Channel Verification
When this applies

App and courier shoppers

Compare the rewards terms for direct orders with the terms for a delivery partner. Check whether the account needs linking and which benefits, if any, apply. A lower delivery price may be worth more to you than a future reward.

Keep in mind: Check the selected channel before counting on points.

More detail

Compare direct ordering and the delivery partner separately. Do not assume an account linked in one place qualifies in another.

05

Link Phone Numbers and Digital Accounts Before Buying

Account Linking
When this applies

Omnichannel shoppers

Connect your member identifier and phone number to your digital profile so in-store and online purchases reflect on the same balance. Proper profile setup helps avoid missing points on qualifying transactions.

Keep in mind: Retroactive claims for missing in-store transactions often require saving and manually submitting paper receipts.

More detail

Check that the member identifier on your receipt matches the account you use. Keep the receipt if you need to ask about missing points.

06

Check Return Policies and Condition Standards Before Opening Products

Return Policy Audit
When this applies

Skincare and cosmetic buyers

Review the merchant's dedicated return policy before purchasing new items to verify acceptance rules, time limits, and acceptable product conditions. Do not assume all beauty retailers accept opened or gently tested products for full refunds.

Keep in mind: Return acceptance criteria, refund methods, and condition requirements differ substantially between retail brands.

More detail

Find the separate return policy and product exceptions. Keep packaging and purchase records while deciding whether to keep the item.

07

Account for Point Deductions Before Making Returns

Return Adjustments
When this applies

Consumers processing returns

Before returning something, check how the program adjusts earned and redeemed points. Keep a record of the order and your balance so you can identify a discrepancy without treating provisional rewards as cash.

Keep in mind: A return can change the available reward balance.

More detail

Compare your balance before and after the refund. If the change is unclear, ask the merchant with the order reference.

08

Understand Account Inactivity Policies Without Unnecessary Buying

Account Maintenance
When this applies

Occasional shoppers

Read the account inactivity rules if you shop only occasionally. Decide whether maintaining the account serves a real purpose. Do not add small purchases simply to keep points you otherwise have no reason to use.

Keep in mind: If an account is closed for prolonged inactivity, previously accumulated points are generally forfeited.

More detail

Read what counts as activity under that program. Do not assume a login preserves points, and do not buy unwanted items to keep an account active.

09

Weigh Birthday Perks Against Marketing Email Preferences

Profile Privacy
When this applies

Registered members

Before adding birthday information, check what the program requests and how any benefit is delivered. Weigh a perk you would use against extra notifications or profile details. Do not assume every member receives the same offer.

Keep in mind: Eligibility and redemption conditions belong to the specific offer.

More detail

Compare the information and notification permissions requested with the perk you would actually use. Providing extra profile details is a choice.

Identify Non-Earning Cart Items and Excluded Fees

Cart Audit
When this applies

Cost-conscious shoppers

Separate the price of the products from delivery, taxes and other charges. Read which amounts qualify for rewards. This gives you a more realistic estimate than multiplying the whole payment by an advertised earning rate.

Keep in mind: The payment total and qualifying spend may differ.

Separate merchandise from taxes, delivery and other charges, then check which amounts qualify under the program.

A simple way to compare rewards

Start with the products you need and a spending limit. Compare the final price at your usual stores before considering points. Then check whether your account and chosen purchase channel qualify. After shopping, keep the receipt and compare the posted balance with the program terms.

Example: a reward is not a reason to double your budget

Imagine you planned to spend 40 units on skincare. A promotion requires a basket of 60 units. Adding 20 units of products you do not need leaves you spending more today, even if you receive a future perk. If the extra item is a planned replacement, compare the combined price with buying it later. This is an illustration, not a current promotion.

Write down three figures: what you planned to spend, what you would actually pay, and any future purchase needed to use the reward. Treat a future reward separately from money saved on today's receipt.

Questions worth asking

What happens to points after a return?

Ulta explains that points earned on a returned purchase are deducted. Check the relevant program before using a balance that includes an item you intend to return.

Should I buy something to stop points expiring?

Only if the purchase already makes sense. Check the expiration date and any minimum redemption requirements. Losing a small unused reward can cost less than buying an unwanted product.

Does a membership make opened cosmetics returnable?

Membership and return eligibility are separate questions. Read the product-condition rules on the store's return page before opening or testing something you may send back.
